Utena is to the magical girl genre as Evangelion is to the super robot genre, only Utena had far more money and style to accomplish its mad deconstruction and didn't have all that pretentious religious veneer standing between the viewer and the show's core. No, Utena accomplishes its mind trip by a mix of general strangeness and much violent social taboo smashing. One of the most beautiful, troubled shows out there. I love it so.
