El Hazard

Lavishly animated with a lush middle eastern motif that is rare in anime, El Hazard is one of the finest OAV series ever produced. On the surface, it seems to be just another "harem comedy" (i.e. Tenchi Muyo); look a little deeper, though, and you'll find that A) not all the girls want to jump the main character, and B) there's quite a plot going on here, with power plays, political maneuverings, and one of the most entertaining gauntlets a main character has ever had to run. And the ending ... the ending is so perfect that it had me wandering around in a gibbering state for a few days. Hence the collection.
